President, Capitol Records UK

Nick Raphael is President of Capitol Records in the U.K.. His first music industry experience came in 1987 when he promoted a night at Dingwalls in Camden Lock, London at 16 years old. In the early 90s, Raphael moved to Leeds and organized, managed and promoted several nights at a number of club venues which led to him becoming a DJ and recording artist with partner Paul Fryer under the name TWA. Raphael, Fryer and Suzy Mason went on to establish the legendary, award-winning Vague club, which ran between 1993 and 1996. His work from 1991-1994 as a Nightclub promoter, DJ, recording artist and remixer led Raphael to his first corporate job in the U.K. music industry at London Records, where he served as Product and later Label Manager for iconic dance label FFRR - signing multi-dance hits including his first No.1 single, Armand Van Helden’s "You Don't Know Me.”

In 1996, Raphael left London Records to start NorthWestSide Records (at BMG) with Christian Tattersfield, where the pair signed Jay Z for the world, among others. In 2000, NorthWestSide Records was rolled into Arista Records and Raphael was appointed A&R Director. One year later in 2001, Raphael left Arista to join Sony, where he was hired as the Managing Director of Epic Records U.K. (becoming the youngest front line label head ever in U.K. Music). Following 10 years at Sony, Raphael moved to Universal Music in 2011 to re-launch London Records. Following Universal’s acquisition of EMI, they decided to launch Capitol Records in the U.S. and U.K. in April 2013 at which time the London Records roster and staff were rebranded to Capitol Records U.K. At Capitol, alongside his longtime A&R partner Jo Charrington, Raphael has had massive global success, signing Grammy, BRIT, Oscar and Golden Globe-winner Sam Smith (20M+ album sales), 5 Seconds Of Summer (the only band in history to have their first 3 albums go to No.1 in the U.S.) and Liam Payne (whose debut single is the best selling solo single from any One Direction member). Over the past 24 years Raphael and Charrington have seen their artists garnering 23 U.K. No.1 singles, 12 U.K. No.1 albums, 4 U.S. No.1 albums and selling over 100 million albums as well as building and selling two publishing companies.
