BBC INTRODUCING GOES INT’L AND DEBUTS AT MUSEXPO

Building on its opportunities for under-the-radar talent, BBC Introducing has announced that it is taking four artists to this year’s A&R Worldwide’s MUSEXPO event, one of the industry’s most well-connected calendar dates. BBC Introducing was the launching pad (in many cases pre-signing, pre-publishing and pre-booking deals) for acts such as Florence & The Machine, Ting Tings and many others.

The BBC announced in a press release last week, “That in partnership with the Performing Rights Society (PRS) for Music Foundation's British Music Abroad scheme, BBC Introducing is giving four unsigned artists, who all uploaded their music at www.bbc.co.uk/introducing, the opportunity to perform to some of the music industry’s biggest names at MUSEXPO, which is held from May 1-4, 2011.

Hailing from Leicester, urban singer-songwriter Luke Bingham will join Liverpool alternative-acoustic artist Luke Fenlon and Welsh electro-pop outfits Friends Electric and Man Without Country in Los Angeles next month during the MUSEXPO industry showcases for labels, publishers, booking agents, music supervisors, media from the US and around the world.

The journey that these four artists experience will be captured for a special documentary, which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 1 later this year. From their pre-trip preparations and their hopes and fears about the event, it will capture their first impressions of Hollywood and their final performances. It will also feature interviews with the panel that selected these artists, discussing their choices and also the current new music market.

Jason Carter, Editor, BBC Introducing, says, “BBC Introducing International has enabled us to give another fantastic opportunity for new UK musicians. Our aim is to support new UK talent with unique exposure, and these acts have been selected to play by the cream of the US recording industry. It will be great for those artists selected and there will be a Radio 1 documentary about their experiences which will give useful insights to other new artists in the UK.”

Luke Bingham added, “I’m really excited about the opportunity to go to LA with BBC Introducing and perform in front of some of the biggest people in music. My ultimate dream has always been to be an international music artist and now I’ve got this chance to take my music over to America, alongside some of best of the UK’s rising stars.”

The four artists were selected via a panel of US music industry individuals, including Craig Kallman, Chairman/CEO Atlantic Records Group; Kevin Weatherly, Sr. VP Programming CBS Radio & VP Programming KROQ Los Angeles & Jack-FM Los Angeles; Steve Schnur, Worldwide Head of Music & Marketing, EA Games and Troy Carter, Chairman & CEO Atom Factory (worldwide manager of Lady Gaga).

A&R Worldwide Head Sat Bisla said, “A&R Worldwide is an independent new music discovery and development platform and is very excited to have BBC Introducing present some of the UK’s most promising new ‘export ready’ talent at this year’s MUSEXPO Los Angeles. MUSEXPO brings together the global music community, who will undoubtedly be inspired by the plethora of great new talent - we anticipate some great outcomes for these British acts.”

Troy Carter, Chairman and CEO, Atom Factory (worldwide manager for Lady Gaga) commented, “BBC Radio 1 is one of the world’s most respected and influential broadcasters. Their ability to break new music is unprecedented. I’m excited to have been asked to play a part in the exciting BBC Introducing process of selecting some of Britain's best new talent to share with the US and global music industry at MUSEXPO in Los Angeles.”

2011 has already proved a success for BBC Introducing. The Musicians' Masterclass, which was held across Abbey Road and Maida Vale Studios on 3 February, saw 250 musicians from across the UK connect with big UK artists (Mark Ronson, Tinchy Stryder, Calvin Harris) and top industry professionals from the BBC, the media, live music and recording industries as well as a host of BBC DJs.

In addition, since January, BBC Radio 1 has added a BBC Introducing artist to their daytime playlist, offering invaluable exposure. It will continue to highlight these artists each week this year. BBC Introducing has also been nominated at this year’s Sony Awards in the Best Use of Multiplatform category.

MUSEXPO 2011 LOS ANGELES TALENT SPOTLIGHT

An array of top emerging international and US talent is set to arrive in Hollywood in Los Angeles (the music and entertainment capital of the world) next month for the 7th annual MUSEXPO at the W Hotel in Hollywood. This top tier of unearthed global talent will showcase at the legendary S.I.R. showcase studios in Hollywood on Sunset Blvd. Most of the talent is available for signing, licensing, booking, legal representation and/or publishing.

Here’s an overview of some of the international talent that will be showcasing from May 1-4 2011 at S.I.R. studios – the full conference and showcase schedule is now available at www.musexpo.net.

AURA (Origin: Copenhagen, Denmark): Danish chanteuse Aura is truly a citizen of the world--the first seven years of her life were spent sailing the high seas on her parents’ boat! But she’s actually from the small, rocky Danish island of Bornholm, trapped in the waters between southern Sweden, Germany and the Baltic countries. Aura writes all her own music and lyrics, with influences ranging from Dolly Parton and Tracy Chapman to Antony & the Johnsons and Jeff Buckley. Though only a tender 22 years of age, she’s already drawn comparisons to Feist, Shania Twain and Gwen Stefani--while tackling darker subject matter than the average pop singer. “But also simple love songs and poems--I want to bring it all, no censorship,” she says. “I’ll camouflage it in simple pop melodies and hope that it will reach the masses. I write with humor and irony and with a wish to make a positive difference with my music and my voice, my life, while I’m here.” The critics seem to appreciate this approach: Berlingske, the Danish equivalent of the Herald Tribune, raved, “One of the best Danish debuts ever... already the world star she deserves to be.” Aura is currently available for signing, licensing and booking in multiple territories. Aura will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Tuesday, May 3rd at 7:30PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

MOYCANO (Origin: Lisbon, Portugal): Moycano is a Portuguese singer/songwriter who always had the dream of becoming a professional singer. Looking for an international career, he moved from Lisbon to London in September 2007. After years of honing his craft, 2011 is starting very well for the artist, who is very busy preparing the show for his international multi-city “album release party,” taking place in the cities of Lisbon, London, New York and Los Angeles. Dawn is a debut album full of stories and it is the reason behind the creation of this international initiative. Moycano still believes in his dream, now more than ever. Asked why the name Moycano, he replied, “Tribes live from the soul and from the nature. My music evolves in that way, similarly to the involvement of nature. It's the natural process of creation which happens like the bloom of a flower, naturally!” The artist has musical influences such as George Michael, Michael Jackson, Queen and The Beatles, and also artists like Prince, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers and James Brown; combining all those diverse influences, Moycano has developed a unique style of his own. Moycano is currently available for signing, licensing, publishing and booking in multiple territories. Moycano will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Wednesday, May 4th at 8:00PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

MY FICTION (Origin: Brisbane, Australia): Things are really starting to happen for powerhouse four-piece My Fiction. But if you have been around their hometown of Brisbane, Australia anytime in the past year, you could see it coming, the buzz steadily building, the shows getting bigger and the band growing in confidence. Armed with a brilliant new record and an impressive live show, My Fiction is making good on the promise they’ve shown since emerging onto the local scene. The sound is indie rock without the baggage. My Fiction knows what makes people move and how to connect. The big guitars, bigger melodies and powerful bottom end all combine to make something immediate, but with depth. Lyrically powerful, their songs leave plenty of room for emotional connection. Little wonder they find inspiration through artists as diverse as Bowie, Midnight Juggernauts, Battles and Regurgitator. It’s music that speaks of dark and mischievous romance, heartbreak, missing the last train home and taking your BMX for a joyride in the suburbs. As Rolling Stone recently put it, “My Fiction's music brings to mind less the sun-drenched suburbs of Brisbane and more the cold streets of London…Whether this juxtaposition of shoe-gazing and youthful enthusiasm works is academic, because My Fiction can really write hooks.” The band is currently available for signing, licensing, booking and publishing. My Fiction will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Tuesday, May 3rd at 8:30PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

RUBYLUX (Origin: Brighton, England): The phrase “Britain’s best-kept secret” gets used to describe a lot of new bands, usually wildly inaccurately, for groups which have yet to play outside their rehearsal rooms. Yet how else are Rubylux to be labeled? Here, after all, is a remarkable act which has already released its own live DVD; has a thriving official fanclub with an ever-growing number of disciples paying a £10 annual subscription; who are one of the few Western bands to have toured Vietnam; whose songs have been played on “Heroes” and “Neighbours;” and whose spontaneous “Street Gigs” earned them enough money to fund recording their debut album with James Sanger, producer of Madonna, U2 and Manic Street Preachers. Those feats may be impressive, but they’re not as impressive as Rubylux’s soaring music. Distilled perfectly into the 45 minutes of debut album Fake Control, it’s a sound that swerves passionately from the universal anthems of “The Boy Could Fly” and “Gold Rush” via the political fire of “They Sold You” and “Westminster” to the thunderous, harsh rock on “I Want You” and “Heart Made by Machines.” Thanks to support from A&R Worldwide last year the band inked a worldwide deal with BMG Rights for publishing; however, they’re still available for signing in multiple markets worldwide. Rubylux will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Wednesday, May 4th at 9:30PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

A MILLION YEARS (Origin: Brooklyn, New York USA): A Million Years is a Brooklyn-based four piece who are making music for your grey matter. Stimulated by the intellectualism and sonic experimentation of bands like Radiohead, Spoon and Wilco, they strive to create a world of smart, brooding characters wandering around in our digitized soundscape. Their debut full-length album, Mischief Maker, was released in July 2010 and was produced by Shannon Ferguson of the band Longwave. On the record, A Million Years wear their love of guitar-driven indie- rock on their sleeve. Mischief Maker also touches on sonic elements found in electronic music, using drum machines alongside real drums and synthesizers alongside the guitars and bass to create a sound that is dense but also feels organic. Formed in early 2007, A Million Years began as a sort of revolving door with an ever-changing list of band members hashing out the songs born in Keith Madden’s (vocals/guitar) bedroom. Andrew Samaha (bass/vocals), Andrew Vanette (drums/vocals) and Nick Werber (guitar/vocals) later joined to create a collective of passionate, music-obsessed workaholics. A Million Years has toured extensively throughout the east coast and in venues all around New York City, while also receiving national airplay on radio stations such as NYC's WRXP, WEQX and WKZQ. A Million Years will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Sunday, May 1st at 8:30PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

ANTOINE GRATTON (Origin: Montreal, Quebec, Canada): Born and raised in Montreal’s Notre-Dame-de-Grâce district, Antoine Gratton started his musical career singing with Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal. He started playing piano in high school and expanded to the bass and guitar. He recorded his first songs in a makeshift studio in his room. A friend who felt that Antoine’s talents were too good to be left undiscovered sent a demo tape to Tacca Music, which contacted Antoine days later to offer a recording contract. Antoine immediately began writing the other songs that would be included in his 2003 debut album, Montréal Motel. The record’s success brought Antoine in contact with many Quebecois artists including Éloi Painchaud, who would become his alter-ego. This partnership helped him evolve both personally and musically and he went on to produce a new album in 2006, Il était une fois dans l’est, a much closer representation of his true emotions and nature. Antoine then embarked on a two-year tour during which he performed over 200 shows and earned a Juno Award in 2007 for Best Francophone Album. He hit home with his third opus, Le problème avec Antoine, released in February 2009 by Sphere Musique. This explosive, rhythmic, vibrant and touching album propelled him to new heights. Antoine Gratton will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Tuesday, May 3rd at 8:00PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

APRIL DIVINE (Origin: Umeå, Sweden): For a group that’s been together for a decade now, the hard-rockin’ Swedish four-piece April Divine is surprisingly reticent about discussing their past. This despite the fact that they quickly caught the attention of the discerning ears at P3, Sweden’s biggest rock radio station, whose listeners voted the group “Best Unsigned Swedish Rock Band.” It also conveniently ignores the legions of energetic, sing-along audiences that rabidly populate some of the biggest festivals and venues in their native land, courtesy of a booking arrangement with touring behemoth Live Nation…and even their debut effort, the aptly titled Chapter One, which was released through Ninetone Records/Universal Records Sweden in January 2007 to rapturous reviews, receives seemingly short shrift. However, even a single listen to the group’s sophomore effort, Redemption, swiftly explains their preference for peering forward. Whether it’s the monstrous guitar riffs percolating throughout songs like album opener “No One” and “Water and Wine,” the magnum opus “Copycat” and the anthemic “Alibi,” or the gorgeous piano melodies and haunting lyrical phrases of numbers like “Redemption” and the panty-moistening ballad “Faced Down,” April Divine’s new work represents the culmination of a decade’s worth of blood, sweat and beer-stained gigging throughout Scandinavia. April Divine will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Monday, May 2nd at 11:30PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

DZHAM (Origin: Moscow, Russia): Moscow might seem a strange place to procure a rising hip-hop star…but truth is stranger than fiction. The dynamic, twenty-something Dzham is determined to become Russia’s first international hip-hop star. He’s off to a good start, having released four full-length albums in his homeland along with a bevy of videos featured on MTV Russia, all the while collaborating with the most famous Russian DJs and artists--all without being signed to any music label. However, Dzham isn’t one to give up without a fight. After moving to Moscow from his birthplace of Smolensk as a child, he noticed both the good and bad sides of the Russian way of life: dark suburbs and luxury clubs, family problems and a pervasive criminal atmosphere in his town. All that influenced him to become a rap artist; his self-written lyrics are based on the things that surround him every day. Dzham’s arrival on the Russian and European rap scene has marked the beginning of a new era in rap music, with Dzham himself proclaiming that he is about peace not war. His light, soft sound and tunes and distinctive voice, coupled with hints of ’90s old school, have all put Dzham in the running as one of the most outstanding and potentially successful new names in rap/pop and already is securing licensing deals worldwide for numerous of his potentially massive global hit singles. Dzham will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Monday, May 2nd at 11:00PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

INGRID OLAVA (Origin: Lillehammer, Norway): In March 2008 Ingrid Olava released her debut album, Juliet’s Wishes, to both commercial and critical acclaim. It quickly reached Gold status in her native Norway and garnered three Norwegian Grammy nominations, for “Best New Artist,” “Female Artist of the Year” and “Best Song” (“Back to Love”). In February 2010 she followed up that success with her sophomore effort, The Guest, released on her own Daring Viola label through Universal. The album reached No.2 on the Norwegian album charts, No.1 on iTunes and Ingrid received the Best Female award at the 2011 Norwegian Grammys for The Guest. She released the. Please Welcome EP in November 2010 as her first international release, receiving a warm reception from the European media including NME.com, Sunday Times Culture, Monocle, Music Week, Line Of Best Fit and Drowned in Sound, which proclaimed, “So she’s pretty, she’s petite, and she wears those hip-sailor-cut flares. Oslo's Ingrid Olava has that whole quaintly-cool-Feist-on-a-piano thing going on. There’s absolutely no reason why she shouldn’t be the Next Big Thing.” She toured the UK in support of the EP, including shows at the Royal Festival Hall and Purcell Rooms at London’s South Bank. Ingrid is currently writing and recording for her next album and will be releasing a second international EP in June 2011. Ingrid Olava will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Monday, May 2nd at 9:00PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

KAILE GOH (Origin: Singapore, but has lived in Los Angeles for the last decade): Born in Singapore, Kaile Goh spent her first five years there before moving to Los Angeles. In L.A. she began modeling for Ford Modeling as a kid, becoming a go-to face for Disney, Target, Kodak, Mattel, Sony and others due to her innate, natural beauty and inimitable presence. With the money she made from modeling, she bought a Gibson Hummingbird guitar, which she still constructs all of her songs on. The songs started pouring out of her at age 10, though. Kaile could barely fret the Hummingbird, but her mom would take her to local open mic nights where she would perform originals to stunned audiences of regulars. In 2010, she landed a meeting with Lava President Jason Flom. Playing three songs acoustically for Flom in a room at The Beverly Hills Hotel at last year’s MUSEXPO, he signed her on the spot. Before she knew it, she was in New Jersey with producer David Bendeth (Paramore, Breaking Benjamin) recording her first album, with the 15-year-old infusing attitude into each and every tune she writes and sings. First single “Gold” teems with a raw, real energy as Kaile carries the chorus with style, spirit and sincerity. Her voice rolls from arena-ready hooks into pulsating, propulsive verses that could bring any crowd to its feet. MANNA (Origin: Helsinki, Finland): Born in Paris to a Finnish mother and an Algerian father but now based in Helsinki, Finland, Mariam "Manna" Jäntti has been releasing music since 2008. Following the UK/Finnish release of Manna’s critically acclaimed album Songs of Hope and Desire in early 2010, she has been working on new material and will be recording with acclaimed producer Alain Johannes (Arctic Monkeys, QOTSA, Eleven, No Doubt) in spring 2011 for the release of a new album in September 2011. Mixing influences from over the decades, Manna effortlessly combines musical elements from punk rock to dreamy folk, creating a unique and powerful sound. She has already garnered great attention from the UK press, with Mojo stating, "Striking is Manna, looking like a cross between Charlotte Gainsbourg and Patti Smith. Blending PJ Harvey’s stomp with CSS’s dance moves is audacious, and it's clear she's ready to cross borders," while Classic Rock Magazine raved, “There's a lot of New York in there, given the terrific, narcotic ‘Truth Song’ and ‘Holy Dirty Game.’ But that’s only part of the story. Her magpie instincts make room for ’60s girl-group pop, highly atmospheric ballads, and the kind of hoodoo vamp rock that's been bubbling up from basements since kids first learned to plug in a guitar.” Manna is available for publishing, label and synch opportunities. Manna will perform at MUSEXPO 2011 in Hollywood on Monday, May 2nd at 10:00PM at S.I.R. Studios at 6465 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.
